  • Šentjernej and Jernej
  • Šentjernej, a town under Gorjanci, was named after a Roman church dedicated to St. Bartholomew (Jernej), which was built in the middle of a large field. It was named Saint Bartholomew in the Field, but was locally called Saint Jernej or Šentjernej. Šentjernej and the parish of Šentjernej were first mentioned in the Constitutional Charter on 8 May 1249. During the reformation, between 1547 - 1548, Primož Trubar worked as a priest in Šentjernej, which was the reason for naming the village Luther’s village. The author of first Slovene Protestant books was sent to the parish of Šentjernej to restore the collapsed economy due to frequent Turkish incursions and looting. He was known as a reasonable master and he managed to quickly set healthy economic foundation in the parish.

He escaped from Šentjernej “in the middle of the night” to Germany and there continued his translation works.  Today, the modern cultural centre in Šentjernej proudly bears his name.

  • A Rooster – The symbol of Šentjernej
  • The distinguishing sign of Šentjernej is a rooster. It is a symbol of wakefulness and was often a traditional decoration of a roof. According to the folk legend it protects the house and its inhabitants from lightning and fire.

The rooster is portrayed in the coat of arms of the municipality of Šentjernej, and the visitors of Šentjernej events are amused by the big mascot of the Šentjernej rooster. There are also procedures in progress for breeding and protection of indigenous breed of Šentjernej rooster. The rooster is also imprinted in the mosaic on the east side of the Šentjernej cultural centre, and the creation of this mosaic dates back in the period of the ancient Romans. The inn PRI JERNEJU has given the symbol of Šentjernej a special place next to the name as well.

  • The day of st. Bartholomew
  • On the day of St. Bartholomew, 24 August, Šentjernej celebrates a municipal holiday. The festivities last for several days. During this time, a number of traditional events take place: Jernej’s fair with an exhibition of roosters and making “the mayor’s goulash”, Jernej’s hike on Gorjanci, Jernej’s parade, horse races, concerts, sporting events, and an open-door day at the Riding School Hosta and the Outdoor Museum.

    Pleterje Charterhouse

Pleterje Charterhouse is the only still active Carthusian monastery in Slovenia. It was founded in 1403 by the order of Count Hermann II of Celje. In the 16th century the monastery was taken away from the Carthusians and given to the Jesuits in order to eliminate Lutheranism, popular in this area. In the 18th century the monastery was closed and in 1899 reacquired by the Carthusians again. Today they cultivate 30 hectares of agricultural land, which belong to the monastery, in nature friendly way. Among Pleterje spirits, made from pears, apples, plums and juniper berries, a real speciality is a pear of Pleterje, which matures in a bottle, attached to a tree branch, torn off together with the bottle and watered with pear brandy.

    Open Air Museum

Open Air Museum is set directly next to the Pleterje monastery. On a meadow, where used to be monastery's ponds in the Middle Ages, there is a display of several old farm buildings, typical of Šentjernej Field of the 19th century. You can see a typical homestead and other peasant buildings, a toilet and a well. All the buildings, exception is only a fruit or flax drying room, are made of oak and beech wood and covered with straw. The main part of the museum is a house of the Kegljevič family with a black kitchen (1833), which was brought from the nearby village of Ostrog.

    Stud farm Hosta

The beginnings of a Stud farm Hosta were on a relatively small farm. Today they have 50 Lipizzaners. 16 breeding mares and 2 or 3 breeding studs take care that each year a herd is expanded by a new foal. Almost half of the Lipizzaners spend the year outside on the meadows, enjoying in freedom, socialising and galloping. Within the stud farm they offer a riding school, competition preparations, dressage and terrain riding. Visit around the stud farm is possible at the weekends.
